International Rock band SKINFLINT from Botswana headlines
Nairobi Rock Fest 2012 at club Ichonic (formerly Club Barn) on Ngong Race on
Saturday December 8th, 2012. SKINFLINT band, made up of Giuseppe “Juice” Sbrana
(guitar/vocals), Kebonye Nkoloso (bass), and Alexandra Sbrana (drums), has in
the past-represented Botswana in international festivals especially in South
Africa and Europe.
Their latest album,Gauna was recorded in France and the band
is currently preparing to tour Europe and USA in 2013. Skinflint has over the
years proved to be one of the finest rock bands in Botswana and Southern
African region. Their lyrical mastery and consciousness are evident in most of
the songs produced in their past albums such as Inside Scar, Massive
Destruction, Iklwa, and lately with their fourth album, Gauna.
CNN flew in Botswana in May 2012 and recorded Skinflint live
performances and as soon as they were, done videos were already playing on the
CNN channel. The video attracted about 15 million hits from the CNN website.
Skinflint has been touring since 2007 and has shared the
stage with rock giants Metallica, Carcass, AOA, Strident, Nosey Road, Metal
Orizon, Wrust, Mind Assault, Warthane and many more. Skinflint has toured
widely in Southern Africa and Europe. The three-piece rock band has sold in
excess of 100,000 albums last year.
This is the first ever rock festival in Kenya to feature
International act. Kenya alternative pop and rock bands including Parking Lot
Grass, Last Year’s Tragedy, Rock of Ages, Mortal Soul, and Absence of Light
will support SKINFLINT concert in Nairobi. The rock deejays are drawn from both
South Africa and Kenya. Kenyan Deejays include Dj Jack, Gordo, Shady, and Knord.
Nairobi Rock Fest 2012 is themed to be the first authentic
rock festival that will involve securing most modern stage, sound and lighting.
It will be modeled and run based on the experiences drawn from South Africa
Ramfest and US rock fest “Ozzfest”, Wacken rock fest, and Australian “Big Day

Nominees for the fourth edition of Kalasha Film and Television
Awards were announced early last week. The awards which are hosted by the Kenya
Film Commission will culminate in a main gala event slated for 8th December
2012.

Explaining the online venture, she said, “The high cost of rental properties in Kenya means that

accessibility to markets than a shop in a mall.”
After remaining closed for close to ten years, the Malawian
High Commission in Nairobi is set to re-open in a move geared at strengthening relations
between the two nations.
Plans by the Malawian government were revealed on Saturday,
when President Mwai Kibaki and Malawian President Joyce Banda met at Speke

The Computer Society of Kenya (CSK) held the 17th
edition of Kenya ICT Pinnacle Awards gala on Thursday evening at the Laico

Dubbed ‘Night with the Stars’, the awards ceremony brought

the Information and Communication Technology industry.
The nominees for the sixth edition of the Kenya Coast Music
Awards will be announced this Monday, 26th November 2012. The gala night
will be held on 15th December at Club Lambada International,
Mombasa.
Founded by Julia Achieng aka Beyonce in 2007, Kenya Coast Music
Awards is an annual event that seeks to recognize the achievements of Coastal
musicians across all genres.
Entry charges for the event are Sh400 for regular tickets
and Sh1000 for VIPs (Inclusive of food and cocktails).
The Kenyan government is set to sign a nuclear cooperation
agreement with the Slovakian government by the end of the January 2013.
Speaking about the deal, Slovakia’s Foreign Affairs State
Secretary Peter Burian told Xinhua that both nations have already exchanged a

South Korea’s Daewoo International has signed a $1.3 billion
pact with the Kenyan Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) to construct East Africa’s
largest power station in Kilifi County.
The coal-fired power plant, which is one of the flagship
projects towards attaining the Vision 2030, will have two turbines each
producing 300MW to the current installed power capacity of 1,215MW.
Speaking in Seoul, Prime Minister Raila Odinga said that the
new plant would play a key role in the government’s objective to add 1,500MW of
new power capacity by 2019 and put an end to power cuts.
Jamaican dance hall artiste Andrae Jay Sutherland better known
as Popcaan has announced that he is coming to Kenya this December for a New
Year’s Eve Concert.

Hope Mwanyuma Mugambi
a third year student at Kenyatta University, Mombasa is among three recipients of

Carl ‘Flash’ Tundo driving his Mitsubishi Evo9 won the 33rd
edition of the Guru Nanak Rally to make it 6 wins in the 2012 KCB Kenya National
Rally Championship (KNRC) series.
Navigated by his sister Natasha ‘Tash’ Di Cangio, he posted
a course time of 1.38.10 to win his third Guru Nanak Rally after that in 2009
and 2010. Natasha made history by becoming the first woman in close to 30 years to win a
round of the KNRC series.

President Mwai Kibaki will on Monday, November 19th
2012 launch the Biometric Voter Registration at the Kenyatta International
Conference Centre.
The Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC)
expects to register nearly 18 million voters, after receiving the Biometric
Voter Registration (BVR) kits three weeks ago.
IEBC has identified 30,000 registration centres and they
will be gazetted by next week. The registration process will take 30 days (November
19 – December 18) followed by 15 days of voter register verification.
About 29,000 clerks have been trained on the operations of
the kits, which capture both facial, and fingerprints of the voter.
Registration will take place each day (including weekends) from
8am to 5pm and all Kenyans are urged to register afresh at the nearest registration
centres.

assented to the Traffic (Amendment) Act 2012. The Amendment has enhanced penalties

Each Public Service and Commercial Vehicle
driver will have to undergo a physical fitness, eye, and hearing test after every
3 years before being issued with a driving license or renewal of their license.
Drivers and conductors of PSVs will
have to wear special badges and uniforms as well as undergo tests after every 2
years to ascertain their competence.
Drivers found driving recklessly
for the first time will be fined Sh100,000 or imprisoned for 2 years or both. Second
reckless driving offence attracts a Sh300,000 fine or imprisonment for a year
or disqualification from driving for a period of 2 years.

Raymond Kimutai Bett emerged the 2012 Athens Classic

The Nairobi - Thika Superhighway

President Mwai Kibaki officially commissioned the opening of
the 31 billion-shilling Nairobi – Thika Superhighway on Friday.
Construction of the 50km superhighway kicked off in January
2009 in a move geared at decongesting traffic to Nairobi City by expanding
Thika Road from a four-lane carriageway to an eight-lane highway. The superhighway
also saw the construction of underpasses, footbridges, and provision of interchanges
at roundabouts.

Swimmer Jason Dunford posted a time of 23.14s in the 50m
Butterfly at the 2012 FINA/ARENA World Cup swimming leg in Beijing’s Water Cube
to win Gold on Friday night.
Dunford picked the win after out-touching a formidable
competitor Qibing Zhang from China while third place went to Ashley Delaney who
clocked 23.43s.
In the 100m Butterfly staged on Saturday, Dunford finished
third in a time of 51.34s behind Australian Kenneth To (50.96s) and Qibing Zhang
(51.21s) who bagged gold and silver respectively.
Up to now, Dunford has earned $6,500 in the circuit.
The tournament is a
global circuit of 2-day events that is swum in short course metres setups.

for the 12th edition of Kora Music Awards (Africa’s Grammys) that
will take place Ivory Coast’s capital of Abidjan on 29th December.
Founded in 1994 by a Benin
businessman Ernest Adjovi, Kora Award is a Pan-African Music Award that recognizes
the best artistes of Africa and those in Diaspora.
The four who include singer Marya, Ragga artiste Redsan, gospel
artiste Jimmy Gait and DK as well as the internationally acclaimed Camp Mulla
have received nominations in the ‘Best Female Artiste East Africa’, ‘Best Male
East Africa’, and ‘Best African Group’ category.

Reggae music lovers in Kenya are set to be entertained by Jamaican reggae sensation
Siccature Alcock better known as Jah Cure.
Jah Cure will perform
at Kasarani Indoor Arena on Saturday, 1st December. The Kenyan
concert is part of his latest tour dubbed ‘Call On Me Tour 2012.’
The international acclaimed artiste is coming to Kenya
courtesy of Big Tunes Live Ltd (sponsors of Tarrus Riley Concert) in collaboration
with Dohty Family and QTV, they have promised the concert to be even bigger and
better than Riley’s.
The 10th edition of the annual Kisima Awards were
held on Friday night at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC),
Tsavo Ballroom in Nairobi.
The prestigious music awards, which seek to recognize musical
talent in East Africa, attracted top artistes in the Kenyan Music Industry all
in line to bag the Sh2 million grand prize.
Finally, sensational Gospel artiste Daddy Owen clinched the Artiste of the Year and walked home with the grand prize.

The pageant which will culminate in a grand finale slated for November 16th at the KICC, carries a grand prize of Sh100,000.
German documentary movies at KIFF 2012 on November 1st and 2nd
Don't miss the Nigerian premieres of Jargen Ellinghaus' "Cross and Banner" (Glaube Sitte Heimat) and Miriam Fassbender's "Foreign" (Fremd)! Kenya International Film Festival 2012 presents this week two surprising German independent documentary productions at Starflix Cinemas Prestige Plaza Ndong Road and Alliance Franciase. Both movies have been exhibited at numerous film festivals, among those Dok Leipzig / Germany and Viennale / Austria.
"Cross and Banner", a focus on German traditional culture, is featuring popular Marksmen's Festivals with medieval background. A colourful insight into widespread celebrations with their pageantry of parades, shooting contests, "Kings", "Queens", nobles and clergymen... "The most exotic film of the competition" judged Radio France Internationale after last year's Paris premiere screenings.
