Kenyan Budget 2013/2014

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich has just unveiled the national budget for the year 2013/2014 at Parliament.

The total expenditure amounts to Sh1,640.9 billion while the gross development expenditures is estimated at Sh447.9 billion.

The total revenue estimates for fiscal year 2013/14 stands at Sh1,027.2 billion, comprising of Sh961.3 billion of ordinary revenue, and Sh 67.0 billion of appropriations-in aid.

The total revenue estimate represents an increase of 7.5 percent over the Budget Estimates for 2012/13.

Budgetary Allocations by Sectors

Education

Sh53.2 billion has been set aside for deployment of 1.35 million laptops to class one pupils, development of digital content, and building capacity of teachers and rolling out computer laboratory for class 4 to class 8 in all schools throughout the country. (Translates to Sh 17.4 billion each financial year starting from FY 2013/14)

Sh10.3 billion will go to free Primary Education.

Sh 2.6 billion for school feeding programme.

Sh 20.9 billion for free Day Secondary Education.

Nestle Kenya To Sponsor Kenya Nationals Primary Schools Games

Food manufacturing giant, Nestlé Kenya in partnership with the Ministry of Education is set to announce the sponsorship of this year’s Kenya Nationals Primary Schools Games on Thursday, June 13th, 2013, at the Norfolk Hotel from 10.00am to 11.30am.

The National Games are expected to be held in Bungoma County, this month from June 19th to 21st, 2013.

University of Nairobi's Team ABE Needs Your Vote

Four University of Nairobi engineering students are finalists in the biennial global Airbus Fly Your Ideas competition.

The students who are in their fourth year teamed up a couple of months ago to form A.B.E an acronym for Aero Bamboo Engineering.

The group of Marian Muthui, Alex Njira, Karl Heinz and Tony Kadiegu Mugita pitched their idea of using bamboo to make the interior cabin and flooring of aircraft as an alternative to conventional material.

The bamboo is styled into bamboo Honeycomb lattice which is lighter and stronger compared to wood. The innovation also comes with embedded thermal acoustic foam as a replacement for non-recyclable composite materials used in the manufacture of aircraft cabin items.

JAB Releases Cut-Off Points for 2012

The Joint Admission Board ( JAB) has released the new cut-off points for joining university for students who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2012.

The new cut-off will allow students who scored a minimum of B (of 61 points) selected for admission while girls who scored B (of 60 points) and B- (of 59 points) will also be admitted.

Helb's Swipe Card to Curb Wastage Among Varsity Students

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) is set to launch a smart card that will curb misuse of funds among varsity students.

Speaking on Thursday morning during a meeting organized by the Kenya Institute of Supplies Management (KISM), HELB Chief Executive Officer Charles Ringera said that the Board had plans underway to load loans on smart cards to tame the flippant expenditure by students.

Teacher's Rights Crusader David Okuta Osiany

David Okuta Osiany, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary general  has died in Nairobi.

The vocal champion of teachers' right was pronounced dead on arrival at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital, Rongai after he developed breathing problems.

Acting Secretary General Xavier Nyamu has called on all KNUT branches countrywide to suspend all activities until his burial.

Over 12000 Schools to benefit from PesaPal's Fees Automation

Online payment platform PesaPal now has over 12,000 schools signed up for its School Pay service offering parents and guardians an easy solution to paying their children's school fees.

According to Pesapal.com no bankers cheques, no queues and no repeat visits to the school are required anymore.

The platform allows transactions online via Safaricom's MPESA, Airtel's ZAP and Essar Group's YU CASH accounts.

Apply for Google Student Ambassadors 2013

The third annual Google Student Ambassadors (GSAs) programme is now open to university students from across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The program which was established in Africa in 2011, allows Google to liaise with campuses with a mission to use technology in making a difference. In the second edition it had over 100 universities in 12 Sub-Saharan African countries pooling 170 students.

2012 KCSE Results to be Released on Friday


The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) Chief Executive Officer Paul Wasanga has announced today that the council will release the 2012 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) on Friday, March 1, 2013.

Education minister Mutula Kilonzo is expected to announce the results at Mitihani House, Nairobi starting at 10am.

Housing Finance & Vision 2030 Launch 1 Million Artisans Programme


The Housing Finance Corporation in partnership with the Vision 2030 Delivery Board (VDB) on Friday launched the Army of 1 Million Artisans programme that is geared towards training 1 million building and construction artisans in the country by 2016.

Speaking during the ceremony, vision 2030 delivery Director General Mugo Kibati noted that they will work with the mortgage lender in capacity building, benchmarking, technology and knowledge transfer through technical and vocational education and training programmes inline vision 2030.

2012 KCPE Results are Out


The results of the 2012 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations were released on Monday morning by Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo, seeing three pupils announced top with 430 marks  each

The three were Kinoti Joy Kathure from Meru County, Mwaura Boniface and Wachira Njomo, both from Kiambu with 430 marks out of a possible 500. 

According to the minister, the results were far much better than those of 2011 and 2010, where a total of 416,900 candidates scored above 250 marks representing 51.35 percent of the candidates who sat for the 2012 examinations.

Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo is expected to officiate the release at the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC)'s headquarters Mitihani House, Nairobi.

University of Nairobi Ranks 5th in Africa’s Top Universities



According to the latest ranking of African Universities by Africa.com, the University of Nairobi is the 5th best University in Africa. Three Universities from Egypt took the top three positions with Makerere University and University of Dar Es Salaam coming in 4th and 6th position respectively.
