Make Online Payments with M-Pesa in Kenya & Tanzania

South Africa's PayGate, a payment processing solution has been launched. The new solution will allow consumers in Kenya and neighboring Tanzania to pay for online products and services via M-Pesa.

PayGate's marketing director, Robin Philip explains, “There is very little e-commerce activity in many African countries. But that’s not because people don’t want to be able to buy online – they just haven’t been given the right payment options.”

After the immense success of the M-Pesa platform in Kenya, the World Bank is embarking on a project to enable the average Kenyan buy Treasury bills and Bonds offered by the Central Bank. Anyone with a cell phone line subscribed to a mobile money service will enjoy the service; this is after the mobile phone operator opens an electronic Central Depository & Settlement (CDS) account with the Central Bank.

The new project, branded ‘Treasury Mobile Direct’ is expected to increase the participation of Kenyans in the bond market from the current less than 3 percent. The Treasury Mobile Direct is expected to initially offer short- term paper before eventually introducing bonds.

Two weeks ago Safaricom marked 5 years since the inception of its premier product, M-Pesa. M-Pesa, the brainchild of a Kenyan has revolutionised mobile-banking in Kenya and worldwide. Earlier meant for the large portion of the unbanked population, it started with 20,000 subscribers and now boasts of more than 15 million users. True to the fact that everyone uses M-Pesa, last year it moved  Sh727 billion according to reports by the Central Bank.
