The 2012 Kenya Olympic Team Unveiled

Top Kenyan athletes battled for the London Olympics ticket at the Nyayo National Stadium early this morning.

In the 5,000m women’s race, Vivian Cheruiyot cruised to the finish in 16:08.08 followed by Sally Kipyego in 16:09.49. Former 10,000m champion Linet Masai misses out of the Olympic team after being locked out of top three finishes.

In the 800m men’s, Favourite David Rudisha dominated to win his ticket to the 2012 London Olympics. World youth championships bronze medalist Timothy Kiptum came second.

In the 800m women’s, ‘Kapsabet Express’ Pamela Jelimo won followed by compatriot Janet Jepkosgei.

In the 1,500m women’s race, World Indoor Champion Helen Obiri Onsando won in 4:06.4. Eunice Jepkoiyet Sum trailed her, while third place went to Faith Chepng’etich.

In the 1,500m men, Silas Kiplagat won followed by Nixon Chepseba .The reigning World Champion Asbel Kiprop came third.

In the 5,000m men’s race, Isaiah Kiplagat won followed by compatriot Thomas Longosiwa.

In the 3,000m steeplechase women, Milcah Chemos won the race with Mercy Wanjiku Njoroge trailing her and Lydia Chebet came third.

In the 3,000m steeplechase men, the reigning champion Brimin Kipruto won. Ezekiel Kemboi came second.

The winners and runner-ups have automatic qualification for the London Games while those who come third will be part of the provisional team to be picked by Athletes Kenya.

The earlier team selected include:

Men 10,000m – Wilson Kiprop, Moses Masai and Bidan Karoki

Women 10,000m – Vivian Cheruiyot, Sally Kipyego and Joyce Cheruiyot

Men Marathon – Abel Kiprui, Wilson Kipsang and Emanuel Mutai

Women Marathon – Mary Keitany, Edna Kiplagat and Priscah Jeptoo

The Men Javelin – Julius Yego

Kenya will be also be represented by two Kenyan boxers, flyweight Ben Gicharu and female boxer Elizabeth Andiego.

In swimming the Dunford brothers, Jason and David will represent Kenya.
