Kenya’s Pork Delights was among 17 startup businesses in Africa
that were awarded for their innovation in business at an event held in
Washington DC, US. Each awardee of the African Diaspora Marketplace is expected
to receive an investment grant of up to $70000 to further their ventures.
Pork Delights Limited (PDL) is an agribusiness pig farming
company that is owned by four local farmers. The company has recently ventured
into the Renewable energy sector with introduction of Biogas and High Efficiency
Organic Fertilizer (HEOF) production.
This year’s competition received over 500 submissions from
all over the world. Entrepreneurs compete for the grant as an investment in
their startups.
African Diaspora Marketplace is organized by the Western
Union in partnership with United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Other sponsors of the
event include; Ecobank, Tony Elumelu Foundation, U.S department of State,
African Capacity Building Foundation, Irv Barr Management and the George
Washington University Centre for International Business Education and Research.
