Kenya's Olympic Journey: 1992 Summer Olympics



5 days to the opening of the 2012 London Games

1992, the Games where in the Spanish city of Barcelona with Kenya participating in 5 disciplines; athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo and shooting. 49 participants comprising of 40 men and 9 women represented the country that year.

That year Kenya managed only 8 medals (2 gold, 4 medal and 2 bronze) and was in the 21st position in the overall medals standing.
In the traditional men’s 3000m steeplechase, Matthew Birr (gold) led a clean sweep of Patrick Sang (silver) and William Mutwol (bronze).
In the men’s 800m, William Tanui bagged another gold medal ahead of compatriot Nixon Kiprotich who took silver.
In the men’s 5000m, Paul Bitok won a silver medal.
In the men’s 10000m, the late Richard Chelimo won a silver medal for Kenya.
In the men’s 400m, Samson Kitur earned a bronze medal for Kenya.
