Benjamin Limo receiving the Sportsman of the Year Award from Former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph |
The ninth edition of the Sports Personality of the Year
Awards (SOYA) was unveiled on Wednesday afternoon at the Safaricom’s Michael
Joseph Centre. The awards will be held in December in Nairobi.
Speaking during the launch, founder and SOYA’s incumbent chairman
Paul Tergat reacted to the dismal performance posted by Kenyan athletes at the
London Games and urged Kenyans to be patient and wait for report on the
undergoing national probe.
According to Tergat, this year’s awards will not be
dominated by athletics, opening the awards to other disciplines and federations.
The 2012 SOYA Awards’ theme is ‘Blazing a Generation and
Securing Peace’ which will recognize the vital role played by the youth in developing
and championing the sports cause and national healing through peace.
Safaricom handed over a Sh7 million sponsorship cheque to boost
the event, which recently received Sh3 million from the National Bank of Kenya
(NBK).
The public can send nominations for their preferred candidates
online via info@soyaawards.com or wait
for the SMS lines to be open after 2 weeks to vote.
