The Kenyan government has selected 9 firms that include
Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), and Alcatel-Lucent to help build IT infrastructure
through a public-private partnership, dubbed 4G special purpose vehicle.
Multinationals Alcatel-Lucent and NSN are among the nine
firms selected by the government as co-investors in the Long-Term Evolution (LTE)
network as well as the equipment vendors for the project.
Four Kenyan mobile operators, Safaricom, Telkom Kenya,
Airtel Networks, and Essar Kenya are partners in the project that will also
attract Kenya Data Networks (KDN), MTN Business Kenya, and Epesi Com.
LTE network is a technology standard used for 4G wireless
networks to deliver high-speed wireless services. On average, 4G services are
around four to ten times faster than 3G services, currently enjoyed in Kenya.
4G has a larger capacity to deliver data and facilitate
high-end services such as video-conferencing and gaming.
