Kenyan Relay team loses appeal to South Africa

The relay team of Boniface Mweresa, Vincent Mumo Kiilu, Boniface Mucheru and Alphas Kishoiyan failed to qualify for the 4×400m relay final on Thursday afternoon.
Kenya was disqualified after Mumo collided with South Africa’s Ofentse Mogawane as he made his way around the final bend in the second leg of the race.
Team Kenya officials launched an appeal but got it thrown out by both the referees and the Jury of Appeal. South Africa’s team will advance, even though they did not finish the heat and join team USA, Britain, Bahamas, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Kenya was anticipating the finals where World Champion David Rudisha was set to run the anchor leg alongside Commonwealth 400m champion Mark Mutai.
Favorites Jamaica is also out of the 4×400m relay after dismal performance by Jermaine Gonzales who was reported to be carrying a hamstring injury.
Kenya’s hopes turn to the 800m finals where Rudisha and Kitum will be in action tonight.
