Equity Bank CEO, Dr James Mwangi has been named the 2012
Forbes Africa Person of the Year by Forbes Magazine. Dr Mwangi beat four other
nominees to clinch the award during a ceremony held on Thursday night at the
Porsche Centre in Lagos, Nigeria.
Dr Mwangi was honoured for playing a central role in making
Equity Bank the largest bank in East and Central Africa, with over 70 million
accounts in Kenya alone.

liquidated micro-finance institution into one of the largest and profitable
commercial banks in Africa. He has also driven the bank's aim to transform the
lives and livelihoods of people socially and economically by giving them access
to modern, inclusive financial services that maximize their opportunities.
Mwangi
has been pivotal in the bank's investment in a robust IT platform that can
accommodate 35 million accounts, as well as a level four data centre – the only
one of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa – giving Equity a lead in creating
synergy and convergence between banking telecommunication thus paving way for
mobile phone banking.
The other nominees included Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote
(Africa's richest man), Joyce Banda (Malawi’s President), Tony Elumelu (Founder
and Chairman of Heirs Holding), and Stephen Saad (Co-founder of the Aspen
Pharmacare).
This year Mwangi has received the 2012 Ernst & Young
Entrepreneur of the Year Award, 2012 AABLA Business Leader of Year, 2012 Africa's Innovation Leader of the Year among others.
