OLX Social Media Awards are Now Open

The inaugural OLX Social Media Awards (SOMA) are now open to users of Facebook, Twitter and bloggers. You can nominate someone or yourself in the categories below before June 30th.

The awards are expected to be held on August 9th with winners promised to bag cash, hi-tech electronics and other fabulous prizes.

Online classified, OLX has promised to award Ksh100,000 to the Most influential Facebook personality.

Here are the categories;

Howzit MSN destined for Kenya, Nigeria + Press Release

Howzit MSN is planning to make forays into East and West Africa through strategic Kenya and Nigeria.

The portal which is Africa largest with 3.3million unique browsers per month is set for the battle for online and mobile news space in the region with the official launch set for Monday, 1st July 2013.

The two countries have a high internet penetration rate with mobile being a big feature. Kagiso Media which publishes MSN for Microsoft is seeking to provide content that is tailored to needs of locals.

News24 is a good example of South African portal sites that have succeeded in the region having ventured into Kenya in 2011 and last year in Nigeria.

2013 Millennium Development Goals Awards Winners

Kenya Red Cross award for MDG1 for its contribution in Eradicating Extreme Poverty & Hunger
The 2013 Millennium Development Goals Awards took place yesterday evening at the Crowne Plaza - Upper hill.

Several individuals and institutions were recognized for their outstanding contributions in driving the achievement of the eight MDG goals through their core programmes.

The Kenya Red Cross was awarded the  MDG1 for its contribution in Eradicating Extreme Poverty & Hunger as well as the MDG3 for Reducing child mortality rates and MDG7 Ensuring Environmental Sustainability award.

NTV's Alexander Ikawah Shortlisted for Commonwealth Prize

Alexander Ikawah, a graphic designer with NTV has been shortlisted for the prestigious Commonwealth Short Story Prize.

The author of 'Fatima Saleh' will battle it out with 18 shortlists including Uganda's social activist Dilman Dila ('A Killing in the Sun') and Nigerian law student, Tobenna Nwosu ('No War is Worth Debating').

Open to African Journos: German Development Media Awards

The German Development Media Awards recognize excellence in human rights and development journalism. The awards champion independent media across the world and put the spotlight on journalists telling important stories affecting their communities, countries and regions.

These awards are a new initiative by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Germany's international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle.

MCK's Second Annual Journalists Excellence Awards

The Media Council of Kenya’s second Annual Journalists Excellence Awards (AJEA) will take place on 4th May 2013 as part of celebrations to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day. The annual awards seek to promote professionalism in the practice of journalism in Kenya with respect to Vision 2030.

The Council invites all Kenyan journalists to submit work published or broadcast in the local media within the last year, including up to 15th March 2013.

Joseph Odindo Elected New MCK Chairperson

Nation Media Group Editorial Director Mr. Joseph Odindo has been elected as the new chairperson of the Media Council of Kenya.

A member of the Board of the World Editors Forum and long-serving media practitioner, Odindo was elected during the 13-member Council's sitting today. He now replaces Prof Levi Obonyo.

Pradeep Paunrana is the richest Kenyan on Nairobi Stock Exchange


Ventures Africa has released the 10 richest Kenyans on the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE) based on top investors holdings at NSE as at the end of trading on Friday, December 14, 2012.

Kenyan CEOs have shown that they own considerable shares in their companies and are also good investors at the bourse. Athi River Mining Ltd CEO, Pradeep H. Paunrana , tops the 10 richest Kenyans on the NSE list that includes Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi, Scan group CEO Bharat Thakkar, Co-founder of the NSE and Dyer and Blair CEO Jimnah Mbaru, and industrialist Chris Kirubi.

Other CEOs with considerable stake in their companies but missing in the list include AccessKenya Group CEO Jonathan Somen, Co-operative Bank of Kenya CEO Gideon Muriuki and Rea Vipingo Plantation CEO Neil Cuthbert.
