In the men’s 1500m, Captain Baxton Menjo retained the title
after posting a leading time of 3:48.69 ahead of compatriot Simon Kibai who
finished in 3:49.14. Third place was reserved for Russia’s Andrey Andreev who
clocked 3:58.48.
In the men’s 10,000m, Daniel Kiptum defended his title in a
time of 30:17.79, leading a Kenyan podium sweep of David Kipkoech (30:18.03)
and Peter Toroitich (30:18.70) respectively.
In the women’s 100m, it was another impressive display from
Beryl Atieno who dashed to finish second in 12:34 behind Cuba’s Suslaidy Rivero
who took gold in 11.84. Third place went to Belarus’ Tatsi Chebatarova.
Kenya holds second place in the overall medal standing with
six medals; 2 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze behind leaders Russia with ten medals
(3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze).
In other news: Kenyan
athletes are awaiting the Monaco Diamond League that will be held in France on
Friday with the likes of World 1,500m silver medalist Silas Kiplagat set to
compete.
In football: Kenyan
Premier League champions Tusker FC will start their 2012 CECAFA Kagame Club Cup
campaign against Zanzibar’s Mafunzo on Thursday. Tusker has remarkably won the
championship five times and is now chasing its sixth title in Group C, which also
includes Tanzania’s Azam.
