Orange subscribers in Kenya will now enjoy free Wikipedia
access through their internet-enabled mobile phones.
The service is in line with a partnership signed in January between
Wikimedia Foundation and mobile operator, Orange, where over 10 million Orange
subscribers in Africa and the Middle East (AMEA) are set to receive free access to the
online encyclopedia.
The service is slated to roll out across 20 countries in
Africa and the Middle East, with Kenya becoming the second country in Africa
after neighboring Uganda to benefit from it.
An Orange subscriber will only need his Orange SIM card and
an internet-enabled phone to access Wikipedia services as many times as he
likes at no extra charge as long as he stays within Wikipedia’s pages.
The service is available in all the 285 languages offered by
the multilingual internet encyclopedia, including Kenya’s commonly used Swahili
and English.
Wikipedia is also planning to soon introduce a feature that
will allow users get notifications when they log on the paid pages.
