Defending Olympic Champion Pamela Jelimo, Janet Jepkosgei and
Cherono Koech stormed the women’s 800m heats to qualify for the semifinals on Wednesday.
Jelimo won her heat comfortably in a time of 2:00.54 ahead
of Great Britain’s Lyndsey Sharp (2:01.41). Third place went to Greece’s Eleni Filandra
who came in 2:02.29.
In heat 6, Jepkosgei also had another clean win in 2:01.04
ahead of Ekaterina Poistogova of Russia (2:01.08).
In heat 5, 2009 World Youth Champion Koech finished third in
2:08.43 behind Russia’s Elena Arzakhova who finished in 2:08.39.
The trio will compete in the semifinals slated for Thursday
night.
Earlier in the day, Edwin Soi failed to qualify for the men
5000m finals while compatriots Isaiah Kiplangat and Thomas Longosiwa cruised to
Sunday’s finals.
In heat 1, Soi finished sixth in 13:27.06 to miss the
finals. Hayle Ibrahimov of Azerbaijan won the heat in 13:25.23 ahead of
Kiplangat who recorded a time of 13:25.64.
Heat 2 fielded the fastest qualifiers with Ethiopia’s Dejen
Gebremeskel winning in 13:15.15 ahead of compatriot Yenew Alamirew (ETH) in
13:15.39. Longosiwa finished third in 13:15.41to seal the top three qualifiers.
