Maji Mazuri Centre was named among five innovative projects by
United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) as this year’s winners of the World
Environmental Day (WED) Challenge, on Thursday.
People from all parts of the world participated in the
environmental challenge, which presented a chance to win a Kia Motors
fuel-efficient car.
Kenya’s Maji Mazuri Centre International won the Best Delivers Effective and Substantive Impact
category.
Maji Mazuri (Swahili for Good Water) operates an initiative called
Green Heroes, where dedicated youth focus on organizing and improving waste
management in Nairobi’s informal Mathare settlement. They sensitize and educate
the community through regular garbage collection and other communal activities
that include sports.
On WED, the group organized a communal clean-up event, a discussion
on the Green Economy and a soccer match that entertained more than 2,000 people
in the area.
