‘Kenya
has about 1.6 million registered SMEs that makes 60 percent of all businesses in the
country.’
This year’s Top 100 mid-sized company is Atlas Plumbers &
Builders (K) Ltd. The company was named the winner at an award gala held at the
Carnivore Restaurant on Friday night.
In attendance was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Roads Michael
Kamau who urged SMEs to form a lobby group through which to engage with the
government.
The construction company cruised over 600 firms participating in
the survey, done by Ipsos Synovate and audited by KPMG, to take the top honors.
Tropikal and Keppel Investments took second and third place
respectively.
Yesterday, a survey released showed that majority of small and
medium sized firms in Kenya rely on loans for capital expansion. However, the number
of SMEs that sought lenders for credit and overdrafts declined from the 72
percent posted last year to 57 percent this year.
The Top 100 survey was established in 2008 in Kenya, Uganda (2009)
and Tanzania (2010) by auditing firm KPMG East Africa and Nation Media Group’s Business
Daily and targets companies with a turnover of between Sh70 million and Sh1
billion.
