Narendra Raval feted by Lions Foundation

Narendra Raval receives Kibaki during the official opening of the Maisha Mabati Rolling Mills Ltd 

Mr. Narendra Raval (Guru), Chairman and CEO, Devki Group of Companies was honored by the Lions International Foundation with the Melvin Jones Fellowship in Nakuru.

The honor is the highest form of recognition given to a Lion for exemplary service to their club, their community, and to their Lions organization.

Raval, CEO of the largest construction materials producer in East and Central Africa, says that the desire to uplift the living standards of underprivileged in the society runs deep.

Devki Group has been providing water residents in Athi River Township for the last 15 years as well as supporting a children’s orphanage of over 400. The Group has also been administering food to orphans in the Temples, through the Food for Life Programme for the last 12 years.

H.E President Kibaki honored Raval in 2009 with the Elder of Burning Spear (EBS) commendation for society empowerment.  

He becomes the 12^th person in the entire world to receive such an accolade.

About Melvin Jones Fellowship

The Fellowship, which was established in 1973, is named after the founder of Lions Clubs International (LCI), Melvin Jones. It is explicitly referred to as an honor and not an award, and is the highest form of recognition to acknowledge an individual’s dedication to humanitarian service.   

Fellowship donations are largely responsible for successfully launching the Lion’s global attack on preventable and curable blindness (the LCIF SightFirst program).

Six Kenyan Foundations Feted

Six Kenyan Foundations were honored with prestigious Philanthropy Awards at the inaugural 2012 East Africa Philanthropy Awards in Kampala, Uganda.

The 6 awardees were honored for their outstanding contribution to strategic social development and to growth of the philanthropic movement in the East Africa region.

Here are the Awardees:

The Family Philanthropy Award went to Dr. Charles Mulli, the founder and CEO of Mully Children Family. Dr. Mulli was celebrated for his commitment to rehabilitate street kids and orphans.

Mulli’s story is that a street child who became a millionaire and later sold off his entire possessions to establish a rescue center for street children, orphans and neglected children.

Mulli currently has 3 running residential children homes, 4 community based child care initiatives and has rehabilitated more than 7000 orphans and vulnerable children.

The Corporate Philanthropy Award went to the Safaricom Foundation for their outstanding contributions to social development in Kenya and for promotion of philanthropy among its empoloyees and communities in the country.

The jury cited the World of Difference programme and the Pamoja Scheme, as some of the foundation’s initiatives that made the foundation deserve the award.

The Community Philanthropy Award went to Masaai Girls Education Fund that uses Education as a tool to change harmful cultural practices such as early marriages and FGM, which are widespread among the Masaai Community.    

The Fund not only caters for bright but needy girls scholarships but also targets the local men and boys in their literacy programmes.

The Young Philanthropist of the Year Award went to Ephantus Maina of Happy Kidney (HAKI) Foundation Kenya.

Maina’s story is that of an 18 year old who mobilized his 10 friends to participate in a 120km to raise funds to support a kidney transplant for his ailing mother. After a combined 1200km journey the young men raised $650 against the targeted $6,500, less the amount required to support their noble course.  

His mother died 2 years later leading to the birth of the Happy Kidney (HAKI) Foundation run by the 24-year-old.

The Jury Chairperson Award went to Mrs. Phyllis Keino of Lewa Children’s Home and Moving the Goal Posts, a Kilifi-based girls sports and development organization.

Mrs. Keino is the founder of Lewa Children’s Home and was honored for devoting over 50 years of her life to the forgotten children of Eldoret Town.

Moving the Goal Posts Kilifi was recognized for using football to promote leadership among young women.

The East Africa Association of Grantmakers (EAAG) organizes the East Africa Philanthropy Awards.  

Dr. Hassan Mohammedally Rattansi

Born on 14^th March, 1921 in Nyeri County, the late Dr. Hassan Mohammedally Rattansi was a renowned educationist, philanthropist, humanist, and sportsman who changed the lives of many bright student from poor families with scholarships.

Dr. Charles Mulli Father to the Fatherless

Charles Mulli is the founder of Mully Children’s Family (MCF) mission that has helped more than 7,000 street children and orphans since its inception in 1989.

Mulli’s story is one of a street kid who rose from poverty and suffering to a millionaire and a father to street children, orphans and neglected children. In 1989, he shocked his family by choosing to give away his entire wealth and bringing three street children into their home.

The leading Kenya Industrialist was born in 2 January 1951, Nairobi County. He’s behind the successful Sameer Group of Companies (SGC), a conglomerate of companies with huge investments in all sectors of the economy. The company engages in agriculture (Sasini Tea and Coffee Ltd), energy, construction, transport (Sameer Africa Ltd), financial services (Commercial Bank of Africa), Export Processing Zone (EPZ), and information technology (Kenya Data Networks).

Dr. Arthur Moody Awori “Uncle Moody” EBS

Born 5 December 1927 in Butere, Kakamega County. He was the 9^th Vice President of Kenya from 25 September 2003 to 9 January 2008. Uncle Moody is a marriage counselor, businessman and a philanthropist.

Industrialist and Philanthropist: Dr Manu Chandaria OBE EBS (Manilal Premchand Chandaria)

A man born on March 1, 1929 is defined by his business acumen and the urge to give back to the society. Through the joint family business that spans over 45 countries with interest in almost all-household commodities production, he’s truly a Captain of Industry. He’s chairman of the lucrative Comcraft Group which is a business that over 50 years grown to a $ 2.5 billion business empire.

After attending elementary and secondary school in Mombasa, he left for India. He started his engineering profession in Jamnagar India University, Bombay BSc 1949 before leaving for Oklahoma for BSc and masters in 1950. He has served as director of Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Ltd and chairperson of Kenya Association of Manufacturers.

If there is a businessperson whose name is synonymous to both charity and philanthropy, it is Manu Chandaria. His philanthropy work in Kenya and Asia has great resemblance to that of the Rockefeller Foundation. He is the chairman of the Chandaria Foundation, the family foundation with interest in Education and Health which started in 1952. Other Charitable works include:

In the same year, His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki also awarded him with EBS (Elder of the Burning Spear). He also has many honours, notably a record three-year in a row most respected CEO in East Africa (2000, 2001, and 2002), Jawaharlal Nehru Excellence Award (1989), and Lifetime Achievement Award in Delhi India (2008).
