2012 IAAF World Junior Championships – Kenya

Day Six (final night) – Barcelona, Spain

In the final day of the 14th IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Kenya bagged 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals, bringing the total to 13 medals (4 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze).

Kenya ends its Junior Championships campaign in second place in the overall medals tally behind USA who scooped 19 medals (8 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze).

In the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Conseslus Kipruto dashed to victory recording a leading time of 8:06.10. Kipruto was followed by fellow countryman Gilbert Kiplangat who clocked 8:19.94 ahead of Morocco’s Hicham Sigueni who finished a distant third in 8:30.14.

In the women’s 1500m, Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon emerged victorious after finishing in 4:04.96 to set a championship record. Silver went to Serbia’s Amela Terzic who recorded a time of 4:07.59. Ethiopia’s Senbere Teferi followed her finishing in a personal best of 4:08.28.  

In the men’s 800m, Botswana’s Nijel Amos grabbed his country’s first ever gold in any event after posting a leading time of 1:43.79. Kenya’s Timothy Kitum came second recording a time of 1:44.56 while compatriot Edwin Melly finished third in a personal best of 1:44.79.
