Ethiopia’s Sofia Assefa was disqualified for lane violation
leaving the women 3000m steeplechase title to Milcah Chemos at the 2012
Zurich Samsung Diamond League on Thursday night.
Milcah Chemos was earlier caught in the final hurdle before
falling hard on the track to manage a tenth position finish (9:35.67). Her
rival Sofia Assefa who powered to the finish line first in 9:21.32 was disqualified
after officials found out she had stepped outside her lane to give Chemos the win
with an aggregate of 12 points.
In the men 5000m, Isaiah Kiplangat emerged victorious in
12:58.98 ahead of fellow compatriot Thomas Longosiwa (12:59.24) and United
States’ Bernard Lagat (12:59.92). Kenya’s John Kipkoech finished fifth in
13:02.11.
In Javelin, African record holder Julius Yego debuted in the
Diamond League with a remarkable fifth position finish, having a best throw of
78.74m. Finland’s
Tero Pitkamaki won in 85.27m ahead of compatriot Antti Ruuskanen (83.36m) and
Ukraine’s Oleksandr Pyatnytsya (82.95m).
