Kenya set to launch National Research Foundation

Kenyan science officials say they plan to set up a national research foundation to manage and disburse research grants.

The foundation would operate along the lines of the South African National Research Foundation (NRF). It is one of three institutions being introduced as part of a bill approved by parliament in December 2012.

Crispus Kiamba, permanent secretary in the ministry of science, says preliminary work to set up the foundation has begun. It might be established in the next two months, he says.

Scientist Samuel Kariuki wins Royal Society Pfizer Award 2012



Dr. Samuel Kariuki, a senior director at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and Chief Research Scientist and Head of Department, Centre of the Microbiology Research has bagged the Royal Society Pfizer Award 2012 for his outstanding research in invasive Non-Typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infections in Kenya.

Born in 1943 in Migori County, he’s remembered for his time as the Vice Chancellor of Maseno University.
From 1963-67, he attended the University of Uppsala in Sweden for his Bachelor of Science (Fil.Kand) and later aM.Sc (Physics) at the same institution.

Born in 1951, he was well known for founding the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in 1979. Dr. Koechpioneered many innovative research projects in the country which included the search for a HIV/AIDS cure.He has also served as the Chief Research Officer and Director of KEMRI.

Prof Julia Auma Ojiambo


Born in 29th November 1936, she’s a former member of parliament and a scholar. The story of Julia describes one of a Kenyan who beyond all odds rose to gain respect for women in a male dominated society. She’s the current chair of the Labour Party of Kenya and the founding Professor of the proposed Scientific and Technological Applied Research and Training for Women.
