Day One – Barcelona, Spain
Mercy Chebwogen emerged triumphant in the women’s 3000m race
after finishing in a personal best of 9:08.88. She was followed by Ethiopia’s
Hiwot Gebrekidan who finished ahead of Great Britain’s Gorecka recording best
times of 9:09.27 and 9:09.43 respectively.
In the men’s 10,000m, Ethiopia’s Yigrem Demelash won in a
career best of 28:16.07 followed by Philemon
Kipchillis Cheboi clocking 28:23.98
while compatriot Geoffrey Kipkorir Kirui finished third in 28:30.47.
Earlier Daisy Jepkemei won heat 2 of the 3,000m Steeple
Chase in 9:56.33 to qualify for the finals of the World Junior Athletics
Championship in Barcelona. Compatriot Stella Jepkosgei Ruto also qualified for
the finals after finishing second in heat one behind Ethopia’s Tijinesh Gebisa.
In the men’s 1500m, Hillary Cheruiyot and Dominic Mutili
qualified for the finals.
Agatha Jeruto Kimwasai booked a place in women’s 800m semis
after finishing third in a personal best of 2:3.2 in heat 2.
In France, Jason Dunford bagged gold in the men’s 100m
butterfly on day two of the 2012 Paris Open Swimming Championships.
