Kenya’s Olympic Journey: 2000 Summer Olympics



3 days  to the opening of the 2012 London Games

The 2000 Summer Olympics preferably known as the Games of the New Millennium were held at the beautiful city of Sydney, Australia. The Games entertained 56 participants from Kenya comprising of 34 men and 22 women.

Kenyans participated in 6 select discipline; athletics, boxing, swimming, archery, cycling and volleyball; managing a total 7 medals (2 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze) and an overall position,29 in the medal standings.

In the traditional men’s 3000m steeplechase, Reuben Kosgei bagged gold for Kenya ahead of compatriot Wilson B. KipKeter who won silver.
In the men’s 1500m, Noah Ngeny earned the last gold for Kenya ahead of compatriot Bernard Lagat who finished third for a bronze medal.
In the men’s 10000m, Paul Tergat won a silver medal
In the men’s marathon, Eric Wainaina grabbed another silver medal
In the women’s marathon, Joyce Chepchumba won a bronze medal
