The 29th edition of the Safaricom Mombasa International
Marathon was unveiled on Thursday with the likes of Berlin marathon champion
Patrick Makau and Geoffrey Mutai expected to grace the annual event.
The marathon, which is scheduled for Sunday, August 26th
will kick off from Treasury Square in Mombasa’s Old Town before joining the
Mama Ngina Drive, Ganjohi, Shimanzi, Makupa, Tudor, Municipal Stadium and back
the same route.
Over 500 elite athletes from 6 countries are expected to
participate in the 42km and 10km. With top three finishers in the marathon
receiving cash rewards of Sh200000, Sh100000, and Sh50000 while those in the
half-marathon will pocket Sh10000, Sh5000, and Sh3000.
Main sponsors Safaricom and Athletics Kenya have given a
boost of Sh1.5 million and Sh30000 respectively.
