Gor Mahia are the 2012 KPL Top eight champions after beating
Ulinzi Stars 2-0 in a hotly contested final played at the Moi International
Sports Centre Kasarani Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Ulinzi were the
defending champions and the last team to beat Gor, but Sunday wasn’t their day
as it had Gor’s destiny written all over it.
The game went into extra time after a barren draw, with Gor’s
Rama Salim missing the target in the closing minute. However, Salim made up for
the miss in the 2nd minute of extra time with a beautiful header after
a cross from Moses Odhiambo.
Rama continued to torment Ulinzi in the 13th
minute, making a sly pass to Itumbu Imbem who made it 2-0 to leave Gor fans
confident of walking home with the coveted trophy.
Jerim Onyango was voted man-of-the-match, a title he
deserves as he made Ulinzi’s Waruru day a nightmare.
At half time both sides were still locked in a barren draw
with Gor’s keeper Onyango saving Anthony Nderitu’s penalty in the 39th
minute.
Ulinzi made to the final after beating Chemelil Sugar FC and
Sony FC in the quarters and semis respectively while Gor, were awarded a walkover
after AFC Leopards failed to show-up for the quarterfinals and later thrashed Tusker
FC 4-0 on aggregate in the semifinals.
