The Kenya Premier League (KPL) is set to change its name to
Tusker Premier League (TPL) early next month. This comes after the KPL and East
African Breweries Limited (EABL) signed a 170 million-shilling sponsorship
deal.
EABL’s brand Tusker will now be the Premier League’s
official title sponsor through a three-year period stipulated in the contract.
“The cash injection is seen as a big boost to the league and the
standards of Kenyan soccer at large,” said the KPL Chief Executive Officer Jack
Ogunda.
Under the deal that took effect from July 1st
this year, KPL will receive Sh55 million per year for the 3 years with each of
the 16 clubs set to benefit from the deal. The prize money for winning the
league will go up with each club entitled 65 percent from the total kitty,
according to KPL’s policy.
EABL is also the current sponsor of the National team
Harambee Stars and the Ugandan Super League through its local brand Bell.
