Kenyan women’s Advocate Maimuna Mwidau was among three women
named by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) as the 2012
Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards recipients.
Mwidau will join Rep.
David Dreier and Rep. Nita Lowey both of USA in an award ceremony to be held on
September 11th in Washington to receive the prestigious award. The
annual awards recognize men and women who demonstrate a commitment to advancing
freedom and democratic.
“Ms. Mwidau is an inspiration for anyone looking to effect positive
change in their societies and the world through public service,” said IFES
President and CEO Bill Sweeney.
“She brought women’s
issues to forefront of constitutional and social reform in her native Kenya,
and her efforts to guarantee fundamental human rights for women continue to transcend
national boundaries,” he added.
Mwidau is the chairperson and co-founder of the League of
Muslim Women of Kenya. She has worked with the Constitutional of Kenya Review Commission
and as a consultant on civic education on the new constitution. She is a member
of the Kenya Women Steering Committee that is advocating for the implementation of
the women quota requirement in the National Assembly.
