Mukhisa Kituyi to head UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

Former Trade Minister Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi has been appointed the new Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). 

Dr. Kituyi who was once an MP of Kimilili becomes the first Kenyan to head a United Nations agency as a Secretary General. He will also simultaneously serve as the undersecretary of the United Nations.

Kituyi will replace Thailand’s 66 year old Supachai Panitchpakdi with UN secretary general Ban Kin Moon expected to formally announce his appointment any time soon at the UN headquarters in New York.

Kituyi's Profile

Holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Relations from Makerere University in Kampala.
PhD in Social Anthropology
Master of Philosophy in Development Studies from the University of Bergen, Norway.
Served as Director of the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), Nairobi
Former Member of Parliament for Kimilili constituency, Bungoma County
Served as Minister for Trade and Industry in Kibaki's Regime
