Occupy Parliament: An Uprising Against Collective Greed of Kenyan MPs

On Tuesday, May 14, 2013, peaceful demonstrators will occupy Parliament buildings in Nairobi to protest against an attempt by Members of Parliament to arm-twist the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) into yielding to the MPs’ demands for indefinitely higher pay.

The act of occupying Parliament by members of the general public shall symbolize the power and pre-eminence of the public over persons who hold elective office.

In the recent past, local MPs have made concerted attempts to usurp SRC’s mandate of regulating salaries and apportioning the national wage budget across the public sector. Indeed, caving in to MPs’ pressure to disband SRC, the Sarah Serem-led commission surprisingly decided to award MPs a tax-free grant of Sh5 million each for the purchase of vehicles. Negotiations to have MPs salaries increased are ongoing.

Dr. Mohamud Sheikh Nurein Said is the 2013 Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award winner for his significant contribution to peace in Kenya.

After being notified through skype for winning the prestigious prize he had this to say, "My first encounter with a Peace Corps Volunteer was in 1965 when I joined Marsabit Secondary School, Kenya. As a young boy, I wondered why these white people  came to the remotest area in Kenya to assist us.  Since then, I have been motivated by their spirit of volunteerism, and I never looked back. Throughout my life, from the University to my career as a doctor, I have always been involved in voluntary work and have always tried to serve those who had fewer opportunities than I have had."

The second Edition of the Kenya Kite Festival will take place on the 10th of February 2013 at the Jockey Club, Ngong Racecourse.

In the inaugural Kenya Kite Festival held in August 2012, adults and children alike flew kites, watched the kiting display from professional kiters and experienced Remote Control Airplanes swoop in the air.

Don't miss! ‘TRIP en masse’, contemporary dance production will be performing at the Sarakasi Dome, Ngara Wednesday, January 16, 2013.

After winning an award for best dance performance in the Netherlands, the choreographers of ‘TRIP en masse’ have come to Kenya to work with nine dancers in Nairobi to adapt 'TRIP en masse’ and incorporate elements of the Kenya post-election crisis, resulting in a non-political dance show.

Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan’s book, ‘Interventions, A Life in War and Peace.’ was officially launched in a colorful ceremony held in Accra, Ghana on Saturday.

In the 353-page book, Annan provides a personal account of life in war-torn and peaceful countries as well as the achievements and challenges of the UN.

Alice Nderitu named Woman Peace-Maker of the Year in US

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Commissioner Alice Nderitu has been named among the 2012 Women Peace-Maker of the Year by the Joan Kroc Institute of the University of San Diego in the United States of America.

The award recognizes her human rights and peace-building work in Kenya and the region as well as her efforts in spearheading the UWIANO platform in 2010. This platform she initiated is currently being used as an alert system for the country during the forthcoming general elections in 2013.

Mrs. Nderitu, who before being appointed as a NCIC Commissioner in 2003 worked as as a prison officer, a teacher and reporter, has been in the forefront of preventing and transforming conflict in Kenya.

In the aftermath of Kenya’s notorious 2007-2008 post-election violence, Nderitu joined the newly created NCIC to mediate ethnic and race-related conflict and promote peaceful coexistence. As a mediator and a human rights and ethnic relations specialist for NCIC, Nderitu has led and built mediation teams in Kenya’s conflict hot-spots. 

Other women who were named Women Peace-Makers of the Year include:

Radha Paudel of Nepal, the Founder and President of Action Works Nepal (AWON).

Ludmila Popovici of Moldova, the Founder of the Rehabilitation Center of Torture Victims Memoria (RCTV Memoria) in Moldova.

Nancy Sánchez of Colombia, a gallant journalist who has documented human rights abuses and the survival strategies of everyday women and men for over two decades in the more than 40-year-long conflict in Colombia.

NCIC unveils its peace ambassadors

On Tuesday, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) unveiled its peace ambassadors appointed from 25 prominent Kenyans in a move to promote peace in the country ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The campaign dubbed ‘Kenya Kwanza’ (Kenya first) sourced its ambassadors from media personalities, musicians, business people, scholars, human rights activist, athletes, retired military officers and religious heads.

The NCIC goodwill ambassadors include:

·         Musicians: Eric Wanaina and Gospel rapper Juliani

·         Businessmen: Industrialist Dr. Manu Chandaria and Entrepreneur Patrick Obath  

·         Athletes: Tecla Lourope, Catherine Ndereba, and Paul Tergat

·         Journalist: Julie Gichuru.

·         Clergy: retired Methodist Bishop Lawi Imathiu, Catholic Bishop Cornelius Korir, Canon Peter Karanja of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), Sheikh Abdi Mohammed of SUPKEM, Father Gabriel Dolan, Prof. Alghafur Busaidy, and Rev Naomi Waqo.

·         Army commanders: Lt. Gen (rtd) Daniel Opande and Lt. Gen (rtd) Lazarus Sumbeiywo

·         Human rights and peace crusaders: Ikal Ang’elei, Florence Mpaayei, Priscilla Nangurai and Zarina Patel

·         Scholars and philanthropists:  Prof. Mary Mwiandi, Adam Hussein Adam, Amb. Judith Mbula Bahemuka,  Amb. Amina Mohamed Samia Omar, and Pheroze Nowrojee

NCIC chairperson Mzalendo Kibunja said that the campaign would be geared to promote patriotism, national identity, national values, and diversity in the country.

James Njenga Karume is Dead

The former cabinet minister died at the Karen hospital where he was undergoing treatment for prostrate cancer. He served as a member of parliament for Kiambaa constituency and was regarded as one of the most influential politicians in Kenya. Karume was a determined business man this being clearly shown in his inspirational auto-biography titled 'Beyond Expectations: From Charcoal to Gold'.

R.I.P John Muchuki

Today Kenya pays tribute to one of its legendary sons. Michuki the member of parliament for Kangema constituency and the minister for environment died yesterday after succumbing to a heart attack at the Aga Khan Hospital. He will always be remembered for bringing sanity to the public transport and in particular ending the Matatu Menace.
Muchuki was the first African District Commissioner in Kenya.
