Open to African Journos: German Development Media Awards

Honoring outstanding reporting on human rights and development
The German Development Media Awards recognize excellence in human rights and development journalism. The awards champion independent media across the world and put the spotlight on journalists telling important stories affecting their communities, countries and regions.

These awards are a new initiative by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Germany's international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle.

CNN Multichoice African Journalist of the Year 2013

CNN International and MultiChoice last week officially launched the 2013 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards.

During last years awards ceremony held in Zambia, Citizen TVs Tom Mboya and Evanson Nyaga bagged the prestigious award for their work ‘African Tribe in India’.

Journalists who are interested in entering this year’s competition have until 17th April 2013 to send in their completed entry forms and supporting material.

MCK's Second Annual Journalists Excellence Awards

The Media Council of Kenya’s second Annual Journalists Excellence Awards (AJEA) will take place on 4th May 2013 as part of celebrations to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day. The annual awards seek to promote professionalism in the practice of journalism in Kenya with respect to Vision 2030.

The Council invites all Kenyan journalists to submit work published or broadcast in the local media within the last year, including up to 15th March 2013.

Joseph Odindo Elected New MCK Chairperson

Nation Media Group Editorial Director Mr. Joseph Odindo has been elected as the new chairperson of the Media Council of Kenya.

A member of the Board of the World Editors Forum and long-serving media practitioner, Odindo was elected during the 13-member Council's sitting today. He now replaces Prof Levi Obonyo.

Google Unveils Kenya Elections Hub


Technology might not be a major issue in the country compared to other major challenges but Google use will help Kenyans track elections’ information through a hub. Google has employed the use of fusion tables among other Application Programming Interface (APIs) to ensure transparency and easy access of this information.

Speaking during the launch of the Kenya Elections Hub at the Sarova Stanley Hotel in Nairobi, Ory Okolloh, Google’s policy manager for Africa said that the organization’s role is to organize elections information and not to provide an opinion.

Coastal Stars Feted at Annual Music Awards


Coast personalities including musicians, deejays, and journalists were on Saturday night recognised at the 6th edition of Kenya Coast Music Awards held at Club Mzooqa in Mombasa.

Among the top journalists honoured at the colorful gala were Citizen TV's Mwanahamisi Hamadi and KTN's Ali Manzu with Gospel Artistes Willy Paul and Mercy D. Lai scooping Gospel Artistes of the Year.

Host of the popular TV talk show 'Capital Talk' and K24 TV's chief anchor, Jeff Koinage is on his way out.

Jeff who is behind the trademark slogan, 'All Kenyan, All the Time' is said to be headed to South Africa for a top anchor and reporter position with Arise Television Network, an off-shoot of Arise Magazine. The new network, will broadcast live news and features on the African continent to viewers in major global cities.

Rudisha Named AK Athlete of the Year 2012



World 800m record holder and Olympic champion David Rudisha was named the 2012 Athlete of the Year at the third edition of the Athletics Kenya Golden Gala held on Friday evening at the Nairobi Club.

The 23-year old who clocked 1.40.91 to set the new world record at the Olympics also bagged two other awards, the Middle-distance Award, and World Record Award.

Explaining the online venture, she said, “The high cost of rental properties in Kenya means that customers would have to pay much more for their merchandise. Additionally, going online offers increased accessibility to markets than a shop in a mall.

King Rudisha, Makori feted at IAAF Awards


World 800m record holder David Lekuta Rudisha and Nation Sports Editor, Elias Makori were honored at the prestigious IAAF Awards. 

The awards, which coincided with the International Association on Athletics Federations (IAAF) centenary celebrations, were announced on Saturday at a lunchtime gala held in Pullman Skipper Hotel, Barcelona.

Women for Conjestina up for boxing



A big event is going down tonight at Crescendo Bar & Grill in Karen, dubbed Women for Conjestina Boxing Tournament  the amateur boxing will raise funds for the former middleweight champion and Kenya's most celebrated female boxer Conjestina Achieng.

The star-studded women boxing matches lineup include Media personality Pinky Ghelani, TV presenter Lillian Muli, Radio Presenters Kalekye Mumo and Laura Walubengo, The Premier’s wife Ida Odinga, Diplomat Yvonne Khamati, Musicians Susan Owiyo and Iddi Achieng, Fashion Designer Ann Mc Creath and Nominated Member of Parliament Rachel Shebesh.

Kenyan Concept among CrowdSourced Journalism Award winners



A Kenyan project was named among three concepts as winners of the first Crowdsourced Journalism Award for Africa by the Big Picture Digital Journalism project, an initiative of Internews Europe and International Press Institute.
‘This is My Backyard’ submitted by Anjali Nayar, an award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Nairobi, was among the inaugural winners.
Representing Kenya, the project seeks to use crowdsourced journalism to gather and disseminate information on the subject of land and resources in Africa.

The other two winners were Tanzania’s ‘Tanzglo’, which was submitted by Byekwaso Cosmas, the founder of Tanzglo and Business Manager at Ebony Fm and Zimbabwe’s ‘CCDN’ submitted by Eddington Mutakiwa Shayanowako, Coordinator at Chitungwiza Community Development Network.
The two projects use crowdsourced journalism to give ordinary citizens control over news agendas as well as raising awareness on issues important to their audience.
The awards received 67 crowdsourced journalism concept proposals submitted from 13 countries across Africa.

Here are the other Kenyan-based journalism concepts that were shortlisted in the top 10 concepts:
‘Disaster Reporting’
Submitted by: Robert Mureithi, a Blogger and Facilitator
Summary:  goal is to use crowdsourcing tools as aids to accurate reporting.
‘Eseriani’
Submitted by: IBRAHIM PARANAE KANTET, Chairman ESERIANI
Summary: Aims to use crowdsourced journalism to increase collaboration and reduce tensions.

The Star Unveils Citizen-Reporting App

Kenya’s fastest growing national newspaper, The Star has launched the first Citizen Journalism mobile application in Kenya, similar to CNN’s iReport.    
The new android-based app dubbed ‘Star Reports’ will allow Smartphone users capture news through pictures, videos, and audio-recordings before transmitting them to the mainstream media.
Dickens Olewe, Star Reports Project Leader explained, “Star Reports is our answer to the question of whether collaboration between traditional media and citizens is possible. In a three step process the user can sign up, create, and share their story.”

About The App
Star Reports is a project that was initiated last year with a grant from the World Association of Newspapers through the Mobile News in Africa Project to implement a citizen journalism mobile application project.

The App Description
Star Reports is an open platform that allows citizens to report/create and share news and events in real time from their mobile devices.
Star Reports enables citizens take pictures and type short stories on their mobile devices. Stories will be transmitted from the mobile devices to a centralized content management system for processing by journalists and editors and dissemination to other citizens.
The newspaper has also disclosed that the app will be available in other platforms such as IOS and Symbian in the subsequent release of other versions.

The Android app can be downloaded free from Google Play Store.

Bernard Ndong feted at 2012 Elliptics Awards



Citizen TV Sports anchor Bernard Ndong was among sports personalities honored at the second edition of the Elliptics Awards that was held at the Pride Inn, Westlands on Saturday evening.
Ndong walked away with the Best TV Journalist of the Year Award while his employer, Citizen TV scooped the Best Visual Media in Rugby.
Some of the other awardees included 98.4 Capital FM who bagged the Best Media Audio and Kenya Harlequins taking the Team of the Year Award.
The Ministry of Rugby with full support from the Kenya Rugby Union hosts the coveted awards, and were last held in 2010.
The awards provide Rugby fans in the country the opportunity to reward their own selected nominees and winners by voting.
Other categories that were covered in the awards included MVP of the Year, Director of the Year, Referee of the Year, and School of the Year awards among others.

Joseph Odindo elected to WEF’s Board



Nation Media Group Editorial Director Joseph Odindo is among eight chief editors who were elected on Sunday to the Board of the World Editors Forum, the organization within the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) for senior personnel.

In his capacity Odindo overseas all editorial operations of Nation Media Group, which include 10 newspapers, 2 television stations, 3 radio stations and numerous websites in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
He holds degrees from the University of Nairobi and University of Wales as well as undertaking related education programs at the Harvard Business School and Cambridge University.

The other chief editors elected at WEF’s Annual General Meeting, on the eve of the World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum in Kiev, Ukraine include-
J        Sanjay Gupta, editor-in-chief of the Hindi language Dainik Jagram, he most read daily in India, and CEO of its parent company, Jagran Prakashan. The paper’s 37 editions across 11 states are read by some 55 million people daily.
J        Lisa MacLeod, Assistant Editor of The Financial Times. She joined the newspaper in 2003 and has worked on the company’s strategic newsroom integration and reorganization projects.
J        Markku Mantila, who has been editor of Kaleva in the Finnish city of Oulu since 2009 and was a winner of a Finnish Grand Prize for Journalism last year.
J        TN Ninan, Editorial Director of the Business Standard Ltd in India, and currently President of the Editors Guild of India. He has headed a number of Indian business publications, bringing about substantial change and achieving rapid growth at all of them.
J        Wong Chun Wai, Executive Director and Group Chief Editor of The Star, Malaysia’s leading English language daily. He is also the current chairman of the Asia News Network, the largest Asian umbrella group of more than 21 news media organization, and sits on the country’s Anti Corruption Commission.
J        Kylie Davis, the National Real Estate Editor at News Ltd. in Australia and one of the country’s most highly regarded women in media. Ms Davis is a strong proponent of the value of hyper local journalism. She has had a successful career at a variety of Australian media companies.
J        Patrick Daniel, Editor-in-chief of the English and Malay Newspaper Division of Singapore Press Holdings. He is a director of SPH Magazines, SPH Union Works and Tamil Marasu Ltd, and also chairs two SPH subsidiaries – Straits Times Press and Shareinvestor.com Holdings. He is a graduate of University College, Oxford, and has a Masters degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

2012 UNEP Ozone Africa Media Awards registration extended to 18th



Applications for the 2012 UNEP Ozone Africa Media Awards will be now accepted until September 18, 2012, midnight, Nairobi time.
The Ozone Africa Media Award recognizes exemplary contributions by the media to the phase out of Ozone layer protection in Africa by promoting understanding of environmental issues particularly targeting ozone-related challenges, through compelling and newsworthy individual stories (in print both  audio and audiovisual media) which would make a valuable impact.

Those eligible
The competition is open to all Arabic, English, French and Portuguese-speaking journalists in Africa from the Print, TV, Radio, and Online media.
The submissions will go through a jury composed of representatives of the Montreal Protocol implementing agencies and select media experts.
Awards will be given as follows:
J        Best TV – $1500
J        Best Radio –$1500
J        Best Print (online and offline) – $1500
While winning stories will be published on the UNEP and its Partners’ websites. 
The Ozone Africa Media Award was established in 2010 by the UNEP Ozone Compliance Assistance Programme in Africa in partnership with the African Network of Environment Journalists (ANEJ).
