Machakos County will play host to the first rugby tournament
in Eastern Province this weekend, as the Masuku Sevens tournament kicks off at
the Machakos Golf Club.
“This is a chance for people to take an hour leisure drive
to Machakos and enjoy the wonderful game of rugby in a totally new setting,”
said the tournament’s director Benjamin Ayimba.
12 teams in four designated pools will battle it out for the
grand prize of Sh100,000 in the two-day tournament. Runners-up will pocket Sh50,000
while the most valuable players will bag
Sh5,000 each.

Mwamba RFC, Kenya
Harlequin, Multimedia University, Blak
Blad, Daystar University, Thika RFC, Portland Stormers – Athi River, Team
Quicks, Parklands Underdogs and Kilunda RFC.
Players in the tourney are ready to impress the newly
announced sevens head coach Mike Friday for selection, as the national sevens
circuit commences next week.
Friday is expected to name his final squad of 25 players for
the 2012/2013 International Rugby Board (IRB) World Series after next month’s
Safaricom Sevens tournament.
Mitch Ocholla and Felix Ochieng were also announced on
Friday as deputy coaches.
