According to the latest statistics released by Communications
Commission of Kenya (CCK), there has been increase in usage of mobile phones
and internet in the country.
Mobile subscribers have grown by 1.7 per cent between March
30th and June 30th of this year, raising the number of
mobile phone users in Kenya to 29.7million from 25.2million recorded in the
previous period.
The quarterly sector statistics report shows that prepaid
users are still the largest subscribers with 29.4 million subscriptions (99.1%)
while postpaid subscriptions have grown by 18.3 per cent to bring the total postpaid
subscribers to 273,367 as at 30th June 2012.
Internet usage jumps to
18.5%
Internet subscription in Kenya has increased by 19.2 per cent
from 6.4 million recorded in the previous quarter to 7.7million during the
quarter under CCK’s review.
On the other hand, the number of Internet users rose by 18.5
per cent to stand at 14 million users during the quarter from a year ago.
Mobile data continued to dominate the internet market
contributing to about 99 per cent of the total Internet/data subscriptions.
CCK has attributed the sharp rise to international
connectivity bandwidth that expanded by 58 per cent to 264,584Mbps.
Mobile money transfer
service increases by 2.73%
Mobile money
transfer service had a 2.73 per cent raise bringing the total of registered
subscribers to 19.5million
while the deposits handled during that quarter was recorded at 192.73billion
representing a 4 per cent growth from 185.36billion posted in the previous one.
