2012 Safaricom Kisumu City Marathon Set for Sunday

The annual Safaricom Great Lakes Kisumu Marathon will take place this Sunday, December 16th 2012. Over 500 pro and aspiring athletes are expected to take part in this year's event.

Winners in both the men’s and women’s marathon will each walk away with Sh. 200,000 with the first home runner across the finish line bagging an extra Sh10,000. The second and third place finishers will receive Sh. 100,000 and Sh. 50,000 each.

Organizers have also planned for a 5-km race that will see the winners pocket Sh.7,000 among other cash rewards.

The 42-kilometre race will start at the Imperial Hotel, go over four laps (in Milimani and Nyalenda) before coming to an end at the Kenyatta Sports Ground.

Kisumu Impala Eco Lodge opens

The Kisumu Impala Eco Lodge was officially opened on Friday in the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary. The Eco-Tourism initiative which is a vision 2030 flagship project, seeks to cater for the Western Kenya Tourism Circuit. Plans are also underway to construct a conference centre in the sanctuary.

The 24-bed capacity eco-lodge is owned and managed by the Monarch Group and is located in the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary run by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The sanctuary is home to the rare sitatunga antelope found in the shores of Lake Victoria.

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is situated in Kisumu City along the eastern shores of Lake Victoria (on the way to Hippo Point). The sanctuary is only 10 kilometres from the newly constructed Kisumu International Airport.

R.I.P Mary Onyango

The vice chairperson of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) passed away at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu, Saturday. 

She was the breast cancer ambassador, having battled with the cancer for 13 years she has been hope to many Kenyans. She founded the Kenyan Breast Health Programme, which has created awareness on breast cancer in the country.

 

“You are not finished when you lose, you are finished when you quit.”

This was her brilliant mantra that will remain among us.

Mary Onyango, the strong-willed heroine who ensured cancer patients kept smiling through the pain.
