Kipchoge Keino Retains NOCK Chair


Dr. Kipchoge Keino has been re-elected to the position of Chair of the National Olympic Committee Kenya (NOCK) in elections held on Wednesday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Nairobi.

Keino who has been at the reign since 1989 defeated his former Vice Chair Alfred Khang’ati, managing 21 votes against 10 votes of Khang’ati.

Earlier Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Chairman, Sam Nyamweya opted out of the NOCK elections citing many irregularities in the process. He was contesting for Second Vice Chairperson.

Jeptoo, Kebede Triumph in London Marathon

Olympics and World silver medalist, Priscah Jeptoo and Ethiopia’s Tsegay Kebede emerged victorious in the 2013 London Marathon held on Sunday.

Jeptoo, who finished third in last year's race, dominated the women's race in the last 6km to win in 2:20:15 ahead of compatriot Edna Kiplagat and Yukiko Akaba of Japan.

In the men's race, Kebede narrowly outpaced the 2011 champion Emmanuel Mutai to claim victory in 2:06:04.

Kenyans Record Wins in Brighton & Vienna Marathons

Kenyans continued to reign supreme in international arena on Sunday winning the Brighton and Vienna Marathons.

Dominic Kangor crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 46 seconds to win the Brighton Marathon.

Kangor broke the course record ahead of fellow countrymen Bernard Rotich and Robert Mwangi who came in second and third respectively.

In Austria, Henry Sugut led a Kenyan sweep of the podium winning the Vienna City Marathon for a record third time in four years.

Kenya Extend Reign at Word Cross Country

Kenya maintained its spectacular performance at the 40th edition of the World Cross Country championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland bagging 5 individual gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medal on Sunday.

Teenager Faith Kipyegon defended her junior title beating compatriot Agnes Chebet Tirop to become the only third woman in the history of the race to successfully defend her title.

Athletics Kenya, AK has named the team that will represent Kenya at the World Cross Country Championships set for March 24th in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

The 24-person squad which is currently training at Kigari Teachers College in Embu County will depart on March 20 and return home seven days later.

Kimetto Leads Clean Sweep in Tokyo Marathon

Dennis Kimetto led a Kenyan clean sweep at the Tokyo Marathon, one of the six World Marathon Majors on Sunday.

The 29-year-old posted a record time of 2 hours, 6 minutes and 50 seconds ahead of compatriots Michael Kipkorir Kipyego and Bernard Kiprop Kipyego who came in second and third respectively.

Safaricom Lewa Marathon 2013 Launched

The annual Safaricom Lewa Marathon was officially launched on Wednesday by Safaricom’s CEO Bob Collymore. The 14th edition will take place on the 29th June 2013.

Since its establishment in 2000, the marathon has grown in leaps and bounds into a world-renowned event.

2012 Safaricom Kisumu City Marathon Set for Sunday

The annual Safaricom Great Lakes Kisumu Marathon will take place this Sunday, December 16th 2012. Over 500 pro and aspiring athletes are expected to take part in this year's event.

Winners in both the men’s and women’s marathon will each walk away with Sh. 200,000 with the first home runner across the finish line bagging an extra Sh10,000. The second and third place finishers will receive Sh. 100,000 and Sh. 50,000 each.

Organizers have also planned for a 5-km race that will see the winners pocket Sh.7,000 among other cash rewards.

The 42-kilometre race will start at the Imperial Hotel, go over four laps (in Milimani and Nyalenda) before coming to an end at the Kenyatta Sports Ground.

KCB National Cross Country Championships Launched

Athletics Kenya (AK) has unveiled the 2012/2013 Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) National Cross Country Championships that will take kick off on November 3rd in Nyahururu town.
Speaking during the presentation of a 10.6 million sponsorship from the Kenya Commercial Bank, AK’s Chairman Isaiah Kiplagat said that athletes will have to go through doping tests and part of the sponsorship money will go into purchasing an anti-doping kit.
“Foreign coaches, agents and journalists seeking to engage our local athletes will have to seek clearance with the federation and the Ministry of Sports,” Kiplagat added.
Kiplagat also emphasized that all athletes must honor at least 3 of the 7 weekend meetings for them to be liable for selection for the 2013 World Cross Country Championship in Poland.
The jackpot winners will walk away with Sh1.2 million while series winners will bag Sh20,000 each.

The 2012 Kenya Olympic Team Unveiled



Top Kenyan athletes battled for the London Olympics ticket at the Nyayo National Stadium early this morning.
In the 5,000m women’s race, Vivian Cheruiyot cruised to the finish in 16:08.08 followed by Sally Kipyego in 16:09.49. Former 10,000m champion Linet Masai misses out of the Olympic team after being locked out of top three finishes.
In the 800m men’s, Favourite David Rudisha dominated to win his ticket to the 2012 London Olympics. World youth championships bronze medalist Timothy Kiptum came second.

Kenyans amazing in Rome Diamond League



Vivian Cheruiyoit the World 5000m and 10000m champion was the winner of the women’s 5000m race in Rome, Italy yesterday after a fierce run with Ethiopia’s Meseret Defar. Cheruiyot hopes that yesterday’s performance and victory in Doha will make meet the London 2012 selection.

Paul Koech was another victor after defending his Samsung Diamond League title at the 3000m Steeplechase in 7:54.31. He was followed by his fellow countrymen Abel Mutai, Jarius Birech and world champion Ezekiel Kemboi respectively.

Pamelo Jelimo settled for second after the Ethiopian Fantu Magiso dashed past her near the tape to claim the 800m. Janet Jepkosgei came 5th in the same race that saw South African Caster Semenya claim eighth place.

Hellen Obiri also finished second in the 1500m, which was won by Ethiopian Abeba Aregawi who set a new world record of 3:56.54.

Mutai wins the 10k Ottawa Race



Saturday night, Geoffrey Mutai dominated the mens 10k race in Ottawa, Canada and won it in a time of 27:41. He was too close to break the event record of 27:24, which was set by Deriba Merga.
Last year he won both the Boston and New York Marathons, but will unfortunately not feature in the Kenyan team to the London 2012 Olympics. Fellow countryman, Simon Ndirangu came third clocking 28:37.3

Pamela Jelimo at the Golden Spike Meeting, Ostrava (CZE)



Jelimo got the better of her archrival Caster Jelimo with a convincing win of 1min 58.49sec in the 800m race in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Yesterday, World 800m champion and record holder David Rudisha pulled out of the event with other prior commitment.
In other news world-record holder, Usain Bolt had a disappointing performance clocking 10.04 sec ahead of the London 2012.

Kenyan Olympic Torchbearers ahead of the London 2012


The Olympic Torch arrives in Britain for 2012 relay

Five Kenyans will join other 8,000 prominent figures as the Olympic Torch bearers. Paul Tergat, the former world marathon record holder and Cecilia Mwangi, the former Miss Kenya, will lead the five. Cecilia Mwangi is the ambassador of Ahadi Trust Kenya, an NGO spearheading the Jigger Eradication Campaign in Kenya.  
The other three Kenyans are Abbas Gullet, head of Red Cross in Kenya, CNN Heroes Award Nominee and BBC Personality of the Year Evans Wadongo and the anti-AIDS crusader Asunta Wangura.

Paralympian: Henry Wanyoike

He was born on 10th May 1974 in Kikuyu, Kiambu County. He is a Marathon world record holder and triple Paralympics gold medalist. He started his running career while still in school and in 1995, he suddenly lost his sight to a stroke. After the ordeal, Wanyoike never gave up and went along to win his first gold medal at the Paralympics Games in Sydney, Australia in 2000.

Born July 21, 1972 in Gatunganga, Nyeri County she was arguably the best female marathoner in the
world. Her dominance in the women marathon races is clear having won 2 marathons at the World
Championships in Athletics, 2 silver medals in the Olympics and 4 wins in the Boston Marathon. Her
personal best being 2:18:47 in the Chicago Marathon in 2001.

The London Job

Yet again Kenyan athletes had an impressive performance in the London Marathon on Sunday.

Mary Keitany defended her title in record time of 2:18:36 beating the two-time IAAF World
Championships in Athletics Catherine Ndereba’s record of 2:18:47 in the half marathon. Edna Kiplagat
came second in 2:19:50, Priscah Jeptoo in 2:20:14 while the Chicago champion Florence Kiplagat clocked
2:20:57.

Wilson Kipsang won the Men’s race in 2:04:44. Martin Lel, the three-time winner came second
in 2:06:51 to beat Ethiopia’s Tsegay Kebede in a second. World record holder, Patrick Makau and
defending champion, Emmanuel Mutai couldn’t finish the race.

Boston was all Kenyan

Yet again Kenya proved its dominance in the 116th Boston Marathon (the oldest marathon in the world) on Monday, sweeping all the podium places.
In the men’s race, Wesley Korir came first in 2:12:40, while his compatriot Levy Matebo second in 2:13:06 and Bernard Kipyego close third in a time of 2:13:13.
In the women’s race, Sharon Cherop led the pack in an emphatic time of 2:31:50 Jemima Chelgat came close second in 2:31:53, while third-place went to Georgina Rono in 2:33:09. 
However, it wasn’t all merry for defending champion Geoffrey Mutai who dropped out after 30km due to cramps and Caroline Kilel who seeking to defend her crown, tangled with a water volunteer.
This exemplary performance will boost the preparations for the London 2012 Olympics.
