88mph Opens Applications in Nairobi


08.05.2013, Nairobi, Kenya 88mph, an early stage startup fund and 3 month accelerator program has opened applications for Nairobi. The program assists start-ups by giving them investment of up to a 100k, access to business networks and the know how to quickly grow their businesses. 88mph’s strategy in Africa is to fund strong teams and web-mobile ideas that have the ability to scale across English speaking Africa.

“There’s an immense opportunity to build mobile/web start-ups in Nairobi right now. African Mobile/web is hands down one of the fastest growing markets in the world and we want to reach out to entrepreneurs who build products and services for hundreds of million mobile/web users that are rapidly popping up on the continent,” says 88mph Program Director Nikolai Barnwell.

Barnwell continues,“Unfortunately, the natural course of a startup is to die before succeeding. But we provide the funding and the infrastructure to boost the odds of survival and we now want to look for the next batch of future successful entrepreneurs.”

Amazon Appstore Coming to Kenya

Online retail firm, Amazon has announced that it will expand its Android-based appstore to cover nearly 200 countries - including Kenya.

The launch which is expected in the coming months will have nearly 30 African countries with access to Amazon's app distribution service.

Google Maps Voice Navigation Launched in Kenya

Google Maps has earlier today launched Google Maps Navigation for Android in 9 countries with Kenya, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal among the countries that will benefit from the turn-by-turn navigation service.

Google Maps Navigation is an internet-based GPS navigation system with turn-by-turn voice guidance.

In its Beta version it will support at least Android 2.2 and newer versions.

Other countries the service was launched include Estonia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia

CNN Multichoice African Journalist of the Year 2013

CNN International and MultiChoice last week officially launched the 2013 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards.

During last years awards ceremony held in Zambia, Citizen TVs Tom Mboya and Evanson Nyaga bagged the prestigious award for their work ‘African Tribe in India’.

Journalists who are interested in entering this year’s competition have until 17th April 2013 to send in their completed entry forms and supporting material.

Apply for Google Student Ambassadors 2013

The third annual Google Student Ambassadors (GSAs) programme is now open to university students from across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The program which was established in Africa in 2011, allows Google to liaise with campuses with a mission to use technology in making a difference. In the second edition it had over 100 universities in 12 Sub-Saharan African countries pooling 170 students.

Kenyan Teams Win in Ericsson's 'Apps for African City Life' Award


Ericsson on Wednesday announced the winners of the 'Apps for African City Life' competition. Senegal's Team Shinsekai bagged the first prize for developing an app that aims to support environmental sanitation and hygiene development in cities.

The second and third prizes went to two Kenyan teams, Easy Parking for their app that aims at helping motorists locate and pay for available parking areas thus reducing fuel consumption, and Tokelezea for their app which enables individuals to locate events and places around them and share the information with their friends.

Calls for Application: 8th Lola Kenya Screen Golden Mboni and 14-Plus Award


Lola Kenya Screen, the Nairobi-based charity specialising in issues related to children, youth, mass media, culture and development, has opened her call for film submission and skill-development participation for the 8th annual Lola Kenya Screen audiovisual media festival, skill-development programme and market for children and youth that takes place in Nairobi, Kenya, August 12-17, 2013.

Lola Kenya Screen is also calling upon children and youth interested in developing their creative and cultural entrepreneurship skills and showcasing their films at Africa’s first audiovisual media event EXCLUSIVELY designed for children and youth to send in their applications between December 1, 2012 and April 15, 2013.
