UAE's Al Ansari to Launch Mobile-Money Remittances in Kenya


Al Ansari Exchange, a leading foreign exchange and remittance company based in the UAE, recently signed an agreement with FSI Capital, a leading non-deposit microfinance provider of financial solutions in Kenya, to launch a mobile money transfer facility.

With the launch of the Mobile Wallet Remittance, Al Ansari has become the first remittance company in the UAE to offer money transfer facility to Kenya via mobile phones.

Al Ansari Exchange explained that customers sending money to Kenya simply have to indicate the name of the beneficiary, the beneficiary’s mobile number and the amount to be transferred.

IEBC Releases Election Nomination Dates for Candidates and Parties



The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has published the nomination dates for candidates and political parties on their website. In a notice dated December 28th, 2012 the electoral body has confirmed that the next General Election will be held on March 4, 2013.
According to the notice, political parties wishing to participate in the polls must finalize the nominations of its candidate on or before the January 18th, 2013 while the days for the nomination of political parties candidates and Independent candidates for the Presidential Election will be on January 29th, 2013 and January 30th, 2013.

The 2012 London Olympics concluded on Sunday evening with Africa managing to net 31 Olympic medals across 8 countries. South Africa took the bragging rights of the best-placed nation in the continent and 24th in the overall medal standings with Kenya being pushed to third place behind its archrivals Ethiopia.
Though much was expected from the Kenyan team, winning 11 medals (about 35% of the total number of medals won) is impressive enough for a big round of applause.

IEBC Releases Report on Registered Voters

According to the recently released report by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), 14.3 million eligible Kenyans were registered as voters in the exercise that took place from Monday, November 19 to Tuesday, December 18, 2012.

IEBC managed to register 14,337,399 Kenyans, representing 79.7 percent of the initial projected target of 18 million voters.

Kenya to Host Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference in September


Kenya will become the first African country to host Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference (ESTC) in September 2013. The event which expects 500 tourism industry leaders from around the world will be co-hosted by the Kenya Tourism Board and Ecotourism Kenya.

The main objective will be to draft solutions to advance sustainability goals for the tourism industry. As well as offer The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) and its global network of members an opportunity to reflect on ecotourism’s history, evolution and future.

Founded in 1990, TIES is the world’s first organisation to dedicate all of its resources to tourism as a sustainable development mechanism. It offers guidelines and standards, training, technical assistance, research and publications on ecotourism.

2012 Safaricom Kisumu City Marathon Set for Sunday

The annual Safaricom Great Lakes Kisumu Marathon will take place this Sunday, December 16th 2012. Over 500 pro and aspiring athletes are expected to take part in this year's event.

Winners in both the men’s and women’s marathon will each walk away with Sh. 200,000 with the first home runner across the finish line bagging an extra Sh10,000. The second and third place finishers will receive Sh. 100,000 and Sh. 50,000 each.

Organizers have also planned for a 5-km race that will see the winners pocket Sh.7,000 among other cash rewards.

The 42-kilometre race will start at the Imperial Hotel, go over four laps (in Milimani and Nyalenda) before coming to an end at the Kenyatta Sports Ground.

John Githongo Nominated for Tipperary International Award 2012



Anti-corruption tsar John Githongo been nominated for the prestigious Tipperary International Peace Award, alongside U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Uganda Beat Kenya 2-1 to Win 2012 CECAFA

Hosts Uganda Cranes defeated Kenya's Harambee Stars 2-1 to lift the 2012 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in a nail-biting final played on Saturday evening at the Nelson Mandela Stadium. The win was a repeat of history, where Stars lost to Cranes 1-0 in the 2008 final.

Kenya Trounce Spain to Advance to the Main Cup Quarters

Kenya beat Spain 26 -14 to win the second match of the day and go through to main cup quarters of the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens on Saturday afternoon. 

Lavin Asego opened the score sheet with a try and a successive conversion. 
The second try came from Humphrey Kayange who scored at the corner with Asego converting to make it 14-0. 
Dennis Ombachi delivered the third try with Asego missing the conversion ending the first half 19-0.

In the second half, Carlos Blanco made a try with Pedro Martin converting to make it 19-7. Martin touch down and Ignacio Martin conversion left the score line 19-14. 
In the wee minutes of the match, Willy Ambaka touched down under the posts and Asego converted to end the game 26-14.

Transport Observatory Project to ease movement goods within EA


Transport Observatory Project (TOP), an online portal that helps reduce the cost and time of moving cargo across borders within the East African region was launched on Thursday at the Nyali Beach Hotel, Mombasa.

The platform will gather information for truck drivers, and will help them monitor key performance indicators such as transit times for trucks, cargo dwell time at the port to a host of other issues.

Lawrence Mute named 2012 Jurist of the Year


Former Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) commissioner Lawrence Murugu Mute is the 2012 Jurist of the Year. Mute was honoured by the International Commission for Jurists (ICJ-Kenya) with the prestigious award for his outstanding contribution to human rights advocacy in the country.

The annual Sports Personality of the Year Awards took place this Thursday at the Carnivore grounds. The colourful awards ceremony that were graced by Sports Minister Ababu Namwamba saw world 800m champion and record holder David Rudisha crowned the Sports Personality of the Year 2012.

Blast in Eastleigh near Hidiya Mosque


An explosion has been reported in Eastleigh suburb, barely 48 hrs after a similar one left one person dead and scores injured.

The incident which happened at about 8pm on Friday night took place near Hidiya Mosque next to Ushirika Flats and has left 10 people wounded.

Police are at the scene and the injured have been rushed to Afueni Hospital in Buru Buru.

Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan was among those injured. He suffered a fractured leg and was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital.
A child was also among the wounded.

UAP Names Dominic Kiarie new MD



On  Thursday, the Board of UAP Holdings Ltd announced  that Deputy Group Managing Director Dominic Kiarie will  take over the position of retiring Group Managing Director, James Muguiyi.

The Kenya Copyright Board, Maisha Yetu (Kenya) and PAYT & Dextraw Studio (South Africa) will organize a workshop for artists in the audio-visual category on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the Sarakasi Dome. Kenya’s renowned Hip-hop artist Mwafrika will be the main artist presenting at the Haki za Msanii workshop. Mwafrika will be presenting on his experience as a TV producer exhibiting productions never seen on TV before. Mwafrika currently a presenter on the TV show Raiyaa will engage the audience on TV production and why he uses comedy to pass social messages.

If you are an artist or art lover and would like to interact with peers from East and Southern Africa this is a forum where you could build your networks and learn more about Intellectual Property laws. You will also engage with legal representatives from the Kenya Copyright Board.

Explosion in Eastleigh's Section Three


There has been a reported explosion in Eastleigh's Section Three this evening.

At least 4 people have been seriously injured.

Police say incident occurred at California area near Joska Supermarket.

Kenya Red Cross confirms there are 7 casualties and 2 have been evacuated to Kenyatta National Hospital.
No fatalities.

It's reported that the explosive device was buried by the roadside few metres from where another explosion had occurred last month.

Kenya Dance Krews Awards Set for Dec 11th


The inaugural Kenya Dance Krews Awards (KEDAKA) will be held next Tuesday, 11th December 2012 at the Nairobi Cinema.
Performances by 30 dance crews from Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu; 10 artistes, 4 MCs and 2 DJs.

SOYA 2012 Welcomes Samuel Kuffour



Celebrated footballer Samuel Osei Kuffour will grace the ninth edition of the Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) Gala slated for Thursday night at the Carnivore.  

The former Ghana and Bayern Munich defender Samuel will arrive in the country on early hours of Thursday morning before the awards ceremony.

Kuffour is the youngest Olympic Football Champion of all-time, winning bronze at the 1992 Olympics with Ghana just before his 16th birthday. He made one appearance for his country during the 2006 World Cup finals, against Italy.


At Bayern Munich, he enjoyed great success winning the 2001 UEFA Champions League and 16 other major titles in his 11-year stay at the Bundesliga club.

He had spells with AS Roma, Livorno and Ajax as well as featuring for the Black Stars from 1993 to 2006 (59 appearances).

University of Nairobi Ranks 5th in Africa’s Top Universities



According to the latest ranking of African Universities by Africa.com, the University of Nairobi is the 5th best University in Africa. Three Universities from Egypt took the top three positions with Makerere University and University of Dar Es Salaam coming in 4th and 6th position respectively.   

Jackie Janmohamed elected Cricket Kenya Chairperson



Veteran international umpire Jackie Jan Mohamed of Sir Ali Club is the new chairperson of Cricket Kenya.
Jackie who was nominated unanimously as the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association (NPCA) candidate for the post, was also elected unopposed to become the first woman to chair a national cricket board.

The accomplished lawyer will replace the outgoing chairperson Samir Inamdar; and has said that she will unite the cricket fraternity and work together with the management team to grow the sport in the country.  

Other officials who were elected on Sunday at the Ruaraka Sports Club include Anil Patel (vice-chairperson), Chidam Subramanian (treasurer), and Kalpesh Solanki (development director).

Nairobi to Start in Kenya’s Digital Transition



Kenya’s digital migration will begin with Nairobi where all analog signals will be switched off by 31st December as a trial test before being rolled out to the other towns in the country.

The Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) has urged Kenyans living in Nairobi to buy a set top box before the end of the year in order to enjoy television programming.

The digital migration in the country is targeted at four million analogue viewers.

CCK has licensed over 20 players of digital decoders to sell decoders, which are currently retailing between Sh. 2,000 and Sh. 5,000. Local channels are also ready for switch with over 20 currently being available on the digital TV platform, free of charge.

The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation’s signet service offers free to air service with 18 new channels while 8 others are expected to be activated this December. Some of these channels are airing in vernacular.

It’s expected by June 2013 the whole country will have shifted to digital broadcasting, ahead of the global deadline of 2015.

Some of the advantages of Digital TV over its Analogue counterpart include, capability to send twice as much information in the same amount of bandwidth as analogue TV, resulting in a high quality picture and sound; and better reception as Digital TV are not subjective to weather patterns such as rain or cloudy skies.

Paul Tergat Inducted Into Johnnie Walker Giants



Kenyan marathon legend Dr. Paul Tergat has been inducted into Johnnie Walker ‘Walk With Giants’ Hall of Fame which celebrates the life stories of some of the world’s most inspirational men.

The five-time world cross country champion and world marathon record holder will now join the likes of Living legend Haile Gebrselassie, Formula One Champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, Explorers Ranulph Fiennes and Amyr Klink, Marketing Guru John Hegarty and British Billionaire Richard Brunson.

2012 Marketing Society of Kenya Award Winners


The annual Marketing Society of Kenya (MSK) Awards gala was held on Friday night to recognize corporate and personalities who have made outstanding contributions to the marketing profession.  

Kenya Finishes 3rd in Dubai Sevens

Kenya beat France 15-12 in the third place playoff to finish with 17 points at the 2012 Emirates Dubai Sevens.Kenya now boasts of 32 points after 2 legs of the 2012/2013 HSBC Sevens World Series.

Earlier in the day, Kenya lost to New Zealand 27-7 in the main cup semifinals.In the quarterfinals, the boys saw off Canada with a 19-7 triumphant win.   

Yesterday they won two out of three matches in Pool A to qualify for the quarterfinals. In their opening match, they beat Scotland 12-5 before later defeating Spain 10-7. Kenya, however, lost 10-14 to Fiji in the final match of the day.

Mike Friday’s boys now look forward to South Africa’s Port Elizabeth Sevens where they are drawn alongside Wales, Argentina, and Spain.

James Mwangi Clinches Forbes Africa 2012 Person of the Year


Equity Bank CEO, Dr James Mwangi has been named the 2012 Forbes Africa Person of the Year by Forbes Magazine. Dr Mwangi beat four other nominees to clinch the award during a ceremony held on Thursday night at the Porsche Centre in Lagos, Nigeria.

Dr Mwangi was honoured for playing a central role in making Equity Bank the largest bank in East and Central Africa, with over 70 million accounts in Kenya alone.

Rudisha Named AK Athlete of the Year 2012



World 800m record holder and Olympic champion David Rudisha was named the 2012 Athlete of the Year at the third edition of the Athletics Kenya Golden Gala held on Friday evening at the Nairobi Club.

The 23-year old who clocked 1.40.91 to set the new world record at the Olympics also bagged two other awards, the Middle-distance Award, and World Record Award.
